Hi, friend.
Inside each of us is an inner sanctuary: one that came into being at birth, and one we’ve carried with us every day since.
We were awake and whole in this space, belonging to ourselves, fully with ourselves, before we had language. Before we learned anything that the world expected of us. Before we had to grapple with danger, lack, or betrayal. This space is our home, our center—the place no one can take from us.
How we treat ourselves when we’re in that most private, inner place matters. It matters so much because no one else can be in that place with us the way we can with ourselves—for better or worse.
As we move through the world, we encounter everything the world contains.
We encounter joy that reverberates in our depths in a way we never entirely forget; we encounter loss that makes us the walking wounded. We meet people who are allies: who help us endure life, who offer love in open hands, and whom we can trust. And we meet people who are tormentors: who abuse us, who shame and belittle us, and who worsen our experience of life.
The least we can do is to be an ally to ourselves rather than a tormentor.
